In this investigation, you learned to use symbols to write equations for rules relating variables. These questions will help you summarize what you have learned.

1. The Larson family is traveling from Michigan to Florida at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. Write an equation for a rule you can you use to calculate the distance they have traveled after any given number of hours.

An equation for a rule you can use to calculate the distance the Larson family have traveled after any given number of hours is the speed(which is 60) multiplied by the time they traveled equals to the distance they have traveled. If you write it with symbols (D = distance, T = time) then it will look like this: D = 60T.

2. What are the advantages of having an equation to represent the Larson family's situation?
What are the advantages to having a table? A graph?

You can calcuate the speed, time, and distance if you know at least 2 of them. It is easiest to use an equation. You know the exact or specific number of how much they traveled and how much the speed was by having a table. You know how the distnace changed as the speed and time changed easily by having a graph. You cna also see the direction or the trends with which the speed changes.

Think aobut you answers to these questions, discuss your ideas with other students and you teacher, and then write a summary of your findings in your journal.

In this investigation, I learned the relationship between time, speed, and distnace. I also learned an equation or a formula to calculate the distnace. The formula to find the distance is Speed X Time = Distnace.(Speed multiplied by time equal to distance). I learned some pattern in the table and graph that helped me calculate the distnace for any given time. I realized that you can make the equation shorter and simpler by using some symbols. Finally, I learned that income - cost = profit. This formula made me find each of the 3 things easier.
